I modeled this Frog Man a while back but neglected to upload it to this blog for your viewing delight. It’s my first run at modeling with blender and I’m fairly happy with the results. Hope you like.

3d Blender Lion
Posted: 12th January 2011 by RobotBash in 3d Modeling & AnimationTags: 3d blender, 3d modeling
I’ve been busy with Xmas and then busy being ill with flus and the like so have not done much posting of work recently. I have a few drawings to post from the last drink and draw I was at in 2010 so will put them up soon. I’m working on my 3d skills particularly in regards to modeling. Here’s a work in progress.
Lion Model
This is a model I’m currently working on, obviously quite a bit to do but really enjoying the process. I find trying to model real world forms is extra challenging because if it’s not accurate it looks false.
Oh No He’s Not!… (You get the picture)
Enjoyed Aladdin at the Gaiety with the kids and extended family over the weekend (made the trip to Dublin on train, snow wouldn’t keep us out, the show must go on after all). These two pictures were inspired by the costumes and drawn from memory so probably very different to what the actors were really wearing. Anyhow, I plan to colour the black and white one later with my eldest daughter (she’s 5) so we’ll pop that version up over the next couple of days. Hope you like and don’t be shy to comment.
The Bad Guy
The Emperor
Had a very productive drink and draw tonight in MacCarthy’s bar Dingle. One of our number was suffering from artist block so we agreed to do some 4 minute sketches to get the creative juices flowing. For each sketch we took turns of picking random or non-associated words to inspire the image. The results were creative and plenty of pictures were lashed out. Here’s most of mine from tonight, drawing with a biro type of pen.
Samurai Crocodile
Ice-pop and Octopus
Crisps and Teleport
Horse and Hairdryer
Girl and Music
The Secret Life Of Insects
Blind Drawing
We also decided to a little perceptional work, so we did these ‘blind drawings’ (just look at your subject, don’t take your marker off the page). This was a hit so will be doing more next week with compressed charcoal.
Dragon Attack

These are concept sketches I did prior to creating a finished dragon image posted to Deviant Art. You can see the stages of development where I worked through a few ideas and details.

So I decided I wanted to work on a dragon, can’t recall why, perhaps because I was reading about the Japanese game Dragon Hunter (I think that’s the name anyway…). Started with a dragon head…

…in this image I worked on the dragon head, trying to make the design more solid with a 3-dimensional feel, kind of like a wire-frame. At this stage I hadn’t decided whether to create the final piece in graphics software or 3D Blender…

…next I made a full body sketch and like the use of space, the flow to the image. Using this sketch and some of the details of the head as reference I started working up the image from just blocks of colour in to a finished piece below.
How come I never heard of MyPaint before?
MyPaint is an open-source graphic software application freely available for all to download on a whim. This light weight application won’t demand too much from your PC’s storage but it certainly earns it’s place on any hard-drive.
I came across a mention of it in Dec 2010 edition of ImagineFX game arts mag (the coolest digital artist magazine, much better than Digital Arts IMO). Curious, I decide to try it out and it pleases me greatly. There is vertually no learning curve; just really nice brushes and effects to work with, an easy to use colour picker etc. Do download the Ramon2 brush pack zip file and import it to your brushes. Ramon2 is bursting with a wide variety of custom brushes that are a joy to use.

RAN Movie Inspired Sketches
Posted: 28th November 2010 by RobotBash in artworkTags: Akira Kurosawa, RAN, RAN directed by Akira Kurosawa, RAN film, RAN movie
I recently discovered my local library in Dingle has a small but pretty interesting DVD collection which happily includes the Japanese movie RAN directed by Akira Kurosawa. Find out about this visually stunning movie on the RAN wiki. Inspired by the sometimes dramatic beauty of this film I just had to do some doodles which you can find below. Ink and felt-tip marker in A6 sketchbook.

Really enjoyed making these sketches, particularly the samurai and his action gesture. It never ceases to amaze me how people can have such different preferences as my fellow Drink & Draw buddies all preferred the horseman sketch below.
Software Illustrations

Some software artwork (RGB, 72dpi) from when I worked in Havas Interactive. Artists were provided with a short description for each image and reference style guides. I would produce between 4 and 8 images a day depending on complexity. All images were created with a mouse (no wacoms!) in PhotoShop.

3D Max Walk Cycle
Posted: 24th October 2010 by RobotBash in 3d Modeling & Animation, AnimationTags: 3d animator Ireland, 3d model animation, 3d walk cycle, Animation, bi-ped 3d animation, Irish animator
Okay, this is an old walk-cycle but I wanted to include it because I’m working on new 3d animations but I need something in the site now on the off chance someone is thinking of hiring me and needs to see a sample. This is just a basic character made with boxes, rigged and animated. I used my classical animation knowledge to make this guy strut his stuff.
Games Industry Ireland – And The Future Of Irish Indie Games

Ireland is enjoying a growth spurt in it’s game industry with companies like Riot setting up here, and Popcap Games and Havok expanding it’s workforce in Dublin. Add to that the recently launched DIT Masters in Digital Games course being backed by the likes of Peter Molyneux, Creative Director of European studios at Microsoft Games Studios, and Peter Connolly, Executive Producer of Crackdown 2 for the Xbox 360 at Microsoft Games Studios.
There are also many new indigenous games companies dotted in enterprise centres around the country, with up to 60 of them labelled as ‘high-profile’ start-ups by Enterprise Ireland (Check out what Minister Batt O’Keeffe has to say here).
Well, all in all the future looks bright for the games industry in Ireland, with already 1500 people employed in the the industry. But what about the indie games industry in Ireland? If you’re busy planning your digital game masterpiece but don’t know how to bring it to life, or if you are already developing on XNA, or with Game Maker or C Sharp or whatever, I want to hear from you.
Contact RobotBash about an Indie game you are developing (or about to launch). Or get in touch about a game you are planning and what you need to make it happen, and we’ll see if we can hook up a skill-set to match.
Irish Indie Game Developers…
Listen to this podcast (XNA DEV CHAT PODCAST) you’ll love it. Interview with the makers of kids game Kissy Poo, a massive hit on Xbox 360. Informative and inspiring.
