CHEATIN’ pencil test #1 and #2 – by Bill Plympton

Posted by RobotBash on Mar 12, 2010 in Animation

Well do I remember lining up for the line tester in Ballyfermot with my first ‘bouncing ball’ line test drawings. There’s something special and raw about line tests. We’re so used to seeing beautifully finished special effect enhanced pieces of work that it’s sometimes easy to forget there are real people behind those creations.

Watching a line test is as close as you can get to looking over the animators shoulder while they work without being there.

Check out Bill Plympton’s line tests for his production Cheatin’

Irish Animation Success

Posted by RobotBash on Mar 12, 2010 in Animation

Irish animation oscarsWhile this blog is NOT about the Irish animation industry or intended to document the latest news in animation in Ireland or beyond, I think it would be remiss of me not to at least link out to news articles related to recent Irish animation successes.

The Irish Oscars 2010

Over the past 10 years the Irish animation industry has matured and become internationally recognised as a ‘safe pair of hands’ for companies who wish to outsource their animation production and creative development (creative mostly related to adverts I suspect). Recent Oscar nominations highlighted the vitality and high standards of the Irish animation sector. I’m not going to write a long article about this but rather I’ll provide links to recent news articles that do a far better job of covering the subject.

Perhaps the international coverage Ireland has gained from these successes will make our national broadcasters reconsider their strategy regarding finance of indigenous animation programming?

How To Succeed In Animation

Posted by RobotBash on Mar 3, 2010 in Animation

I updated the blog with some more links to interesting and useful websites, scroll down to the bottom of the page.

While we’re here, I want to draw your attention to the site of Gene Deitch. Gene has published his book ‘How To Succeed In Animation’ and there’s more than a few good pointers in the text for anyone thinking of making a move to animation (people like me…well I haven’t made up my mind yet, still enjoying the idea right now…).f

Enjoy.
